Who We Are

My name is Tracey Suggs, also known as Mia the Reading Mermaid. I am a certified educator in Elementary and Exceptional Student Education.   It is my passion to inspire and foster the love of reading in children of all ages.  During my 20 years in the field of education, I have seen a large number of students that are unable to read on grade level and many students do not have an abundance of books to read at home.  These are the key initiatives of Mermaid Wishes to Learn - Community Literacy Project.   It is my mission, through Mermaid Wishes, to meet with students in their communities and create access to books to support independent reading habits, along with support for the struggling reader!  I created and founded Mermaid Wishes to Learn though grant and donor funds and the services are all free of charge.

About Mermaid Wishes to Learn - Community Literacy Project

Mermaid Wishes to Learn is a 501c3 non-profit program providing educational services and supports to all students, including neurodivergent and special needs learners. We provide tutoring and access to a lending library through a mobile classroom visiting their neighborhoods and communities.

Through learning sessions, students will build phonics and develop writing skills.  Students will have access to these one-to-one learning sessions, along with small group settings.  Stories read in groups will often be paired with a writing or craft activity to help increase story comprehension. We, at Mermaid Wishes to Learn, believe arts are a valuable component of learning to read!  Through our lending library, students will be exposed to books they may not have access to at home or school.  We feel the connection a student is able to make with a book of their interest is invaluable and will help, to not only foster a love of reading, but increase reading skills and comprehension.  Mermaid Wishes to Learn strongly believes patience and practice, along with a strong foundation in phonics will light the way for a successful reader and we are here to help students grow into competent readers.
