Reading Resources

Teaching a child to read can be overwhelming, but can also be very simple.  Talking to your child about anything and everything will increase vocabulary, thereby making reading comprehension easier.  When you are riding in the car, talk about what you see.  When you are cooking at home, talk about the ingredients, and steps you follow to create family meals.  Talk about colors, what things smell, taste and feel like.   Teach your child the back and forth of conversation; encourage them to ask questions.  Phonics, comprehension and vocabulary acquisition are all partners in the development of successful readers!

When reading to your child, stop and talk about each page.  What do you see?  Who are the characters in the story? What do you think will happen on the next page?  All of the conversations you can have while you are reading will increase your readers comprehension.

Words, words, words!!!  Talk with your child!!!
